The Spyglass Group, established in 2002 by Rik Ross, is a boutique search firm that provides Guaranteed Talent to growth oriented companies and professional services firms. As a former Big 4 CPA and public company CFO with over 20 years of executive recruiting experience, Rik utilizes a "Black Box" recruiting model built upon maintaining client and candidate confidentiality while networking and during the early stages of the search process. This model gives clients and executives the freedom to explore market opportunities without the risk of unwanted disclosure of sensitive personal or company information.

TEAM BUILDING FOR IPO

  • New CFO was hired by the CEO and private equity sponsors of a billion dollar plus international manufacturer to build a finance/accounting team and related infrastructure that would allow the company to pursue an initial public offering.

      

  • Rik has a  25 year history with the new CFO,  who is undoubtedly one of the best, brightest and hardest working CFO’s Rik has ever known.  Spyglass first began assisting the company in building the new team in late 2013 when it had a very small corporate office in Scottsdale with just a few key executives.  Since then Spyglass has assisted them in building a top notch finance, accounting and information technology team (including most of CFO direct reports) and has completed over a dozen successful searches for them.

       

  • Company went public in 2016 and is now a billion dollar market cap company.

NEW CFO GROWING, PRIVATELY-HELD SOFTWARE  COMPANY

  • Scottsdale based SaaS provider that is the leading software company in a niche financial application space had CFO resign unexpectedly. 

     

  • The Company’s customers include some of the largest companies in the world. Founder and CEO called Rik based on a referral from a board member/ long-time friend and asked Rik to help him find a new CFO to help lead the company in its latest phase of growth. 

    

  • Within approximately two weeks of being engaged, Rik was able to conduct a confidential search process and bring to the CEO an outstanding group of interested and qualified candidates with the required industry and professional qualifications (software industry CFO’s that were CPAs, experts in software revenue recognition, and in leading a small teams that could support the company’s finance and operational needs.)  Although CEO feedback on each candidate he met with was excellent, one candidate was nearly the perfect match for the Company’s needs and he was successfully hired within a few weeks of initial candidate presentation.

ASSIST PRIVATE EQUITY SPONSOR IN FINDING CFO FOR PORTFOLIO COMPANY

  • Private equity firm founder and lead partner called Rik  to help him find the right CFO for one of his portfolio companies, a equipment leasing company that was growing rapidly via a roll up acquisition strategy.  Rik likes to highlight this search because it demonstrates the value of the long candidate guarantee periods offered by Spyglass.  PE Partner and Rik worked closely with the company’s CEO to interview a strong group of candidates sourced by Spyglass, including one who the PE Partner and Rik both had known personally and professionally for many years.  PE Partner decided (along with his partners and company management) to go with this candidate, as he interviewed well and seemed like a good fit for the role.  Within about six months of the candidate being in the position, it became clear that the fit was not right.  PE Partner is an extremely demanding, very bright “hard-charger” that challenges the management teams of his portfolio companies and the CFO hired was not able to meet this challenge effectively enough. 

     

  • Once the decision was made to remove the new CFO , Rik started right away on a new search and found the company a fantastic CFO talent who had been working in the commercial satellite/ telecom industry overseas and was looking for an opportunity to return to Phoenix where she had begun her career with one of the major accounting firms.  At no additional cost to the company, they added a superstar CFO that was the perfect person to help lead the company from a finance and operations perspective in a period of rapid growth and ongoing acquisitions.

UNIT PRESIDENT

  • President and CEO of a national leader in the real estate and construction sectors called Rik to discuss a sensitive situation. One of his strongest business unit presidents, had expressed an interest in retiring within a few years. The CEO asked Rik to work quietly with him and the subsidiary President to identify a new President for the business, someone who’s a strong leader who would also be comfortable with a lengthy (1-2 years) transition of knowledge and culture from the retiring President to the future one. 

  • Rik was able to develop a strong group of candidates over a period of weeks and work through a lengthy interview and evaluation process with the CEO and his team to help them hire and transition in a new President. Rik managed this search from inception without the knowledge of anyone else at the company or in the industry until the new executive was announced publicly, more than six months after the commencement of the search.
